INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN - November 25, 2022
INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
The Women’s Cell of Government College of Teacher Education, Thycaud, observed ‘The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women’ on 25 November, 2022, at the research room of the campus. The programme aimed at sensitizing the audience on the need to eliminate violence against women, thereby propagating this year’s theme - “UNITE! ACTIVISM TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS”.
The UNITE Campaign has proclaimed the 25th of each month as ‘Orange Day’, a day to raise awareness and take action to end violence against all women and girls. It calls on people everywhere to wear the colour orange, thereby expressing one’s solidarity to this cause. As a bright and optimistic colour, orange represents optimism and a bright future free from violence. In support of this, orange ribbon badges with powerful assertions written on it were distributed to all the students and teachers. All the participants wore the badges throughout the day, thereby showing their support for the campaign.
The programme started off with a prayer song by Mariya George, I B.Ed student.
This was followed by the day’s theme presentation by Bhagya Murali, a member of Women’s Cell. Revathy B R, a fellow member, lucidly delivered the shocking yet highly relevant statistical data of the crimes committed against women worldwide. Sibana, I B.Ed student, recited one of her poems that added strength to the day's theme. A dynamic presentation on rape culture and its various repercussions by Bushra Ansary, the Convenor of Women's Cell, made the audience think critically. This was followed by reflection from the part of students and teachers wherein each of them shared their experiences. Finally, as instructed by the Government of Kerala, an anti-dowry pledge was taken by all the students and teachers. The programme came to an end with the National Anthem sung by all the participants.
