FIELD TRIP 💚 - September 26, 2023
We, the II semester B.Ed students of GCTE, Thycaud, went on a field trip, as suggested by the B.Ed curriculum, on 26 September 2023. A field trip comes with many benefits. Students are able to access tools and environments that are beyond their immediate environment. Our communities are rich learning laboratories. Each experience thus gained solidifies learning and supports important academic concepts.
The department of English, Hindi, Tamil, Social Science and Sanskrit planned a trip to Neyyar Dam, Kottoor Elephant Rehabilitation Centre and Koyikkal palace. Jayakrishna teacher (Hindi department), Kumar sir (Tamil department), Shiba teacher (Sanskrit department) and Santhosh sir (Social Science optional) accompanied us.
OBJECTIVES OF FIELD TRIP
1. Deepen Social and Historical Knowledge
2. Develop Critical Thinking Skills
3. Promote Interest in Art and Culture
4. Reinforce experiential and contextual learning.
5. Enhance classroom learning by making real world connections.
6. Exposure to different lifestyles, places and eras.
DESTINATION 1 : Neyyar Dam
Neyyar dam is a gravity dam on the Neyyar River in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, South India, located on the foot of the Western Ghats about 30 km from Thiruvananthapuram. It was established in 1958 and is a popular picnic spot.
A beautiful lake and a picturesque dam site, Neyyar is the heaven for tourists who search for some serenity and isolation. A Tour to Neyyar Dam will refresh your spirits in such a beautiful surrounding. The dam is a part of the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary which is the home of unique species of flora and fauna. From wild boars and elephants to the vast range of medicinal herbs Neyyar is truly a nature lover’s paradise.
DESTINATION 2 : Kottur Elephant Sanctuary and Rehabilitation Centre
Kottur Elephant Sanctuary and Rehabilitation Centre located near Kappukadu in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala is an elephant sanctuary and rehabilitation centre. Started in 2006 as an elephant sanctuary, the Kerala government announced a project in 2019 to expand it as an elephant rehabilitation centre with international standards. When completed, it will become the largest rehabilitation centre for the elephants in the world. It is also the first rehabilitation centre for elephants in India, constructed at an estimated cost of ₹105 crores. The centre is spread across 176 hectares of forest and currently have 16 elephants, with a capacity to accommodate 50 elephants in future after completion.
DESTINATION 3 : Koyikkal Palace
The Koyikkal Palace is a palace situated in Nedumangadu, Thiruvananthapuram District, Kerala, India. The palace was built in 16th century for Umayamma Rani of the Venad Royal Family. Umayamma Rani was the queen of Venad between 1677 and 1684. The palace is a double storied building and built in the traditional architectural style of Kerala.
The palace is maintained by the Kerala State Department of Archaeology, and also hosts folklore and a numismatic museums. The exhibits in the museum contains such rare instruments as the "Chandravalam", a small percussion instrument used in Ramakathappattu; and the "Nanthuni", a small musical instrument made of wood and string used in Onappattu.
It was indeed a memorable day for all of us. Each destination was a unique experience, and the joy of travelling together added more colour to it.
