PRIDE MONTH CELEBRATION 🌈 - June 22, 2023

                          Be You
                          Do You
                     Celebrate You
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month (LGBT Pride Month) is celebrated annually in June to honour the 1969 Stonewall riots, and works to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) Americans. In June of 1969, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn in New York City staged an uprising to resist the police harassment and persecution to which LGBT Americans were commonly subjected. This uprising marks the beginning of a movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against LGBT Americans.

Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and LGBT Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that LGBTQ individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.

The Department of English, GCTE, in association with Women's Cell, celebrated the Pride month 2023 at the General Hall 2 of the campus. Kavya Dinesh of I B.Ed hosted the event. The programme began with a prayer song by Jessy. This was followed by news reading by Kavya Sagar of I B.Ed Natural Science. Bushra Ansary, a member of Women's Cell, talked on the Pride Month and its significance. I presented the reflection wherein I expressed my take on the statement 'Love has no gender'. Being a student of English Literature, I had to mention the greatest dramatists of all times, William Shakespeare, who was labelled a bisexual. This was followed by the reflection delivered by Mrs. Anju, Assistant Professor of GCTE, who talked about the emotional journey of one her students who belongs to the LGBTQ community. Ms.Rehna Hussain, I M.Ed student, also shared her experience and feedback on the program.
