CONSCIENTIZATION PROGRAMME 🇮🇳 @ G.G.H.S.S Cotton Hill
CONSCIENTIZATION PROGRAMME
CONSTITUTIONAL LITERACY
Conscientization programs, often associated with Brazilian educator Paulo Friere, are educational initiatives designed to raise awareness and critical thinking about social, political and economic issues . The goal is to empower individuals to analyze their ciscumstances, understand power dynamics, and actively participate in transforming their society for the better.
As part of the B.Ed curriculum, all students are expected to be part of a conscientization programme in their respective schools. We, the student trainees who did the first phase internship in Cotton Hill Girls Higher Secondary School, conducted a conscientization programme on the topic 'CONSTITUTIONAL LITERACY' on the 4th and 5th of December, 2023.
OBJECTIVES
The major objectives of our conscientization programme were:-
∆ To create awareness about the history of Indian Constitution.
∆ To inculcate constitutional literacy among the adolescents.
∆ To foster critical spirit regarding fundamental rights and fundamental duties enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
∆ To spread constitutional values among school children.
PLANNING OF THE ACTIVITY
The Constitution Day of India is observed on November 26 every year to commemorate the adoption of the fundamental principles governing the nation. The Constitution of India is the longest written Constitution of any sovereign country in the world. As part of the school activities, Cotton Hill Girls Higher Secondary School observed the Constitution Day in all its glory. Various programs like quiz competitions, Preamble presentation contest and such were organized.
As part of the celebration, the teacher trainees of the school were instructed to give a 5 minute presentation in their respective classes about Constitution, the Preamble, and the Fundamental rights and duties. That was the time when we were thinking of a topic for our conscientization programme. We thought of several topics like Mental Health, Healthy Relationships, Inclusion and Diversity, POCSO Act, Embracing the Self, etc. So when the teachers approached us with this suggestion, we thought of developing it into our conscientization programme. The topic seemed relevant and worthy of discussion in the scenario of the school's observation of the Constitution Day. That is how we arrived at the topic CONSTITUTIONAL LITERACY.
DETAILS OF THE PROGRAMME
Topic : Constitutional Literacy
Date : 4, 5 December 2023
Venue : 8G and 9H classrooms
The first step was the preparation of a brochure for the programme. Keerthara Anil (Mathematics) created the brochure well. The topics to be included in the programme were discussed together and duties were alloted. Bushra Ansary (English) prepared the the PowerPoint slides for the presentation.
All the fourteen students could not manage to find free hours together for the presentation. Since classes were to be engaged promptly, we decided to conduct the programme in two groups and in two different classes. This was arranged in such a way that all the student teachers could be a part of the programme without having to sacrifice their class hours.
EXECUTION OF THE PROGRAMME
After proper planning, we began our conscientization programme. The first session of the programme was on 4 December, 2023 in the 9H classroom. The student teachers who participated that day were:
1. Rajalakshmi - Introduction
2. Ashly L Paul - The Constituent Assembly of India.
3. Mahima, Mary - Fundamental Rights
4. Aswathy, Bhagya - Fundamental Duties
The second session was handled by the remaining teacher trainees on 5 December 2023 in the 8G classroom. With these two sessions, the programme came to an end.
The programme, we believe, was helpful to all the students. To be aware of the Constitution and the rights and duties engraved in it are of great relevance in the current times when crimes and violations are recurrent. This programme and the topics included in it benefitted us too. The need for proper planning and lucid execution made us read more about this topic, during which we came across various information that we, otherwise, would not have been aware of. It was an interactive session with the students. We were able to plan and execute the programme well.
