SCHOOL BASED ACTIVITY @ G.G.H.S.S. Cotton Hill

              SCHOOL BASED ACTIVITY

School Based Activity is an essential component of an educational program like B.Ed or D.El.Ed. Apart from classroom teaching, a school teacher is also responsible for a number of scholastic and school management related activities. School based activities provide first hand exposure to the systematic schooling procedure. It enables a teacher to develop his/her own understanding of the realities of working with mentors and children in real school situations. School Based activities also help to develop professional expertise and understanding as a qualified teacher in a practical sense.

We, a group of 14 student teachers, did our first phase B.Ed teaching internship at
G.G.H.S.S.Cotton Hill. As part of our school based activity, we adapted a chapter from IX standard SCERT Social Science textbook into a role play. There were many reasons why we decided to execute this activity:

a. A role play can accommodate all the students of the class.
b. They will construct knowledge about the lesson on their own.
c. They will learn the lesson in an interesting way through collaboration.
d. The class had students with learning disabilities and role play method will appeal to all of them more than the traditional lecture method.

The script was prepared and the materials needed for the play were also made ready by us. All the students actively involved in the activity.

           RESULT OF THE ACTIVITY

The students participated actively from the beginning to the very end of the role play. The learners with diverse learning styles beautifully stood together and worked towards the success of the play. The activity showcased how successfully social constructivism could be clubbed with innovative theatre education and collaborative learning. The most impressive aspect of this activity was the active roles voluntarily taken up by the students, especially those with learning disabilities. Moreover, the content of the chapter was also familiar to them through the play. The activity sheds light on the need for thoughtful planning of the teaching learning process and making it more inclusive and learner-centred.
