COMMUNITY LIVING CAMP : ചിരന്തന 🍃☘️ - DAY 3 ( 14 February 2024 )

               The third day begins...

DAY 3 started off with the aerobics session handled by Jithi Ma'am. After having breakfast, it was time for the camp  news reading. The representatives of all five groups presented the news in the most creative manner.

SESSION 1 : The journey to change

The first session of the day was by
Dr. Shaji N Raj, a motivational trainer and College Profesor. The session on the topic 'We can Change' began by 9.30am. It was interactive and not at all boring. The group drama that we did was my favourite part of the session. Few points that he continuously repeated were:

My BEHAVIOUR is my responsibility
My TIME is my responsibility
My HAPPINESS is my responsibility
My VALUES are my responsibility.

The session ended with a great surprise. Little did we know that the resource person whom we were listening to was Sreeja Teacher's husband. As a token of our love and respect, a memento was handed over to Shaji Sir in a thanks giving session where several teachers from the college participated.

After the event, the remaining time was used for the preparation of the upcoming survey and flashmob.

                          SURVEY

Post lunch break, all of us assembled in the hall where the instructions regarding the survey were given to us by Sreeja Ma'am. Different locations were allotted to diffenent groups; the handwash and lotions were equally distributed among the teams too.

The teams thus started the survey their respective locations. The questionnaire for the survey was prepared by the students of Natural Science optional. In each house, along with the survey, the handwashes and lotions were also sold. The selling process was smooth for some teams, while it was extremely challenging for others.

        OBJECTIVES OF THE SURVEY

The survey aims:

• to investigate knowledge about                    sustainability.

• to assess the level of awareness on            sustainability and sustainable practices.

• to assess the attitude of respondents          towards sustainable development.

• to evaluate various sustainable practices.

• to investigate the role of government in      promoting sustainability.

ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF                              THE SURVEY

The survey was instrumental in analysing the various sustainable practices that the people of the locality are aware of. The following are some of the major points that may be consolidated from the data gathered through the survey :

It was quite surprising to know that almost 66% of the population had no idea about the concept of sustainable development. Most of the houses have a considerable area alloted for agriculture. Almost 96% of population have enough water to carry out their daily needs; Water scarcity does not seem to be a serious issue in the locality. Only 4 out of 50 houses have a proper rainwater harvesting system; the rest of the population are totally oblivious of this practice.

Almost all the participants have a clear perspective of the ill effects of dumping waste in water bodies. The service rendered by Haritha Karma Sena is worth highlighting; 95% of the population are aware of this service and they avail it too. Only a few percentage of households have a solar panel installed for electricity needs. We came to know that the expense of its installation, not the lack of awareness, is the major reason for this.

Most households are aware of the detrimental impacts of using plastic covers and bags; however the convenience and easy availability make its use prevalent in the locality. It was surprising to note that there were a considerable number of participants who opt for electric vehicles, thereby reducing the pollution due to emissions. The sample seemed heterogeneous in all the aspects considered in the survey.

                        Flashmob

After completing the survey, all the groups gathered at a particular point as informed by the camp coordinators. Some groups sold all their products, while others had a few unsold ones with them. Then, all of us walked to Karakulam junction which was the spot selected for the flashmob. All the arrangements were made for the performance. The flashmob was planned and prepared in a short span of time and hence had many imperfections. However, we enjoyed the public dancing experience a lot. Posters on the theme - Sustainable Development- were also exhibited to spread awareness among the public who watched us.

It was such a tiring day. After the survey and flashmob, we came back to Grameena Patana Kendram, had tea and snacks, and headed to our rooms. Then we had the day's experience sharing session wherein all the groups shared a diverse range of  experiences that they have had. The camp coordinators, along with our Principal and Vice Principal, were listeners to this session.
The perfect ending to the day!

The day ended on a happy note when the movie Vararam Aayiram was played as part of the Valentine's Day celebration. It was a wonderful experience to have watched one of our favourite movies together will all the classmates.
